Abrupt Vineyards

Sonoma & Napa Valley

Abrupt Vineyards pays homage to the diverse geological influences in its various California sub-appellations. The dramatic rivers supplying water to many of our vineyards started flowing north to south. After hundreds of years, the rivers have shifted and are now shaped more like abrupt angles and remarkable geological lines of the California coast. With this “abrupt” angle, we had to display a dramatic visual on our wine label as the official logo.

Head Winemaker: Alison Crowe

Appellation: 100% California

Chardonnay

Carneros // Napa Valley

Tasting Notes

We handcrafted this wine to represent the grapes grown in Carneros, Napa Valley. Elegant and well-balanced, Abrupt Chardonnay offers aromas and flavors of Golden Delicious apple, orange blossom, and guava with hints of vanilla and baking spice. These lovely characteristics flow through on the palate leading to a crisp and refreshing finish.

Winemaking

We picked individual vineyard blocks with the perfect balance between ripeness, sweetness, acidity and flavor and then fermented them separately. This wine went through 85% complete malolactic fermentation in order to preserve a little bit of acidity and “zing” while that amount of MLF allowed a wonderful creaminess and roundness to suffuse the wine. The lots were then oak-aged with a mix of medium and medium + French oak.

Grape Sourcing

This Chardonnay was sourced from our special vineyards in Carneros on the warmer side of Napa Valley. Carneros is one of the rare AVA’s as it is a region at the southern-most tip of Sonoma and Napa Counties. The rounded river stones that were washed down from the mountains thousands of years ago from farther up north in the Napa Valley as well as from the sides of Mt. Veeder contribute to the variety of soils in Carneros. This geological heritage and thousands of years of soil movement actually creates stripes of large and small river rock, interspersed with areas of smaller loam and sand. It’s no secret that Carneros is a classic Pinot Noir and Chardonnay growing area.

Pinot Noir

Carneros // Napa Valley

Tasting Notes

This Abrupt Pinot Noir is ruby in color and has ripe cherry and vanilla aromas followed by flavors of strawberries, blackberries, cola and a hint of spice. The smooth mouthfeel, velvety tannins and super-long finish add up to a spectacularly balanced and sophisticated Pinot Noir.

Winemaking

The grapes were carefully hand-picked at night and in the early morning hours. They were then brought to the winery and 100% destemmed. After a brief cold soak, they were fermented in small vats, maximizing temperature at 85 degrees F. After being gently pressed, the lots went through 100% malolactic fermentation before aging in French oak for 9 months.

Chardonnay

Sonoma County

Tasting Notes

We handcrafted this wine to represent the grapes grown in Sonoma County. This Chardonnay is rich and balanced with hints of vanilla and Gravenstein apple on the nose carrying through on the palate to an elegant, silky finish.

Winemaking

We hand-picked the Chardonnay grapes at night to bring them fresh and cool into the winery. They were then whole cluster pressed directly to small stainless-steel fermentation tanks to let the grapes slowly turn into wine under ideal cool, controlled conditions. The wine is 85% Malolactic complete, in order to maintain the freshness, and lees stirring in tank provided round mouthfeel and additional complexity. A mix of 30% new French and 10% American oak contributed to notes of vanilla, spice and butterscotch while allowing the natural fruit to shine through. We aged on the lees for 9 months in order to extract the maximum richness from this wine.

Grape Sourcing

This Chardonnay was sourced from our diverse vineyards in Sonoma County. The fog from the ocean and rivers gives the wine freshness and provides a balancing ripeness and roundness. Rolling hills, sandy, well-drained soils and careful vineyard site selection mean that we get a great mix of ripeness, flavor density and acid retention.

After a brief cold soak, they were fermented in small vats, maximizing temperature at 85 degrees F. After being gently pressed, the lots went through 100% malolactic fermentation before aging in French oak for 9 months. Patient months of aging yielded “elevated” characters of cherry, strawberry, toast and a little hint of spice. A mixture of light and medium + toast contributed body, richness and finesse character.

Grape Sourcing

Planted on bench-lands and sandy, well-drained sites in Monterey County, our vineyards dip in and out of the fog line during the ripening season. Blocks near the Western Santa Lucia AVA yield intense color and flavor while those on north towards the mouth of the Monterey Bay give us flavor density and great acid retention.
